Times, they are a-changin’

The winds of change are constant. But as with any natural ebb and flow, they sometimes blow a little stronger and right now, there’s a stiff breeze picking up.

The last year has already brought about defining changes for Intercamp, Grant MacEwan University’s student newspaper. We’ve changed our cover format so it’s more visually enticing and focused, and we’ve added some great columns, like Realpolitiks and our regular sex and relationship column Between the Sheets to inspire and inform our readers.

MacEwan has also changed significantly, most notably earning its university status in 2009.

With more students than ever on our campuses, and definitely more activity happening in and around them, it’s time for Intercamp to grow up and get more involved too.

To coincide with MacEwan’s 40th anniversary, which kicks off Sept. 1, 2011, Intercamp is planning its own coming-of-age evolution. During the summer months, the look of your student newspaper will undergo changes. It will be easier to read, our popular columns will be easier to find, puzzles will have a definite place and much more.

But the biggest change will be the actual name of our newspaper. Intercamp was chosen long ago to reflect MacEwan’s multiple campuses united under one banner. As we pursue plans to unite students at a single, sustainable campus downtown, your student paper should progress in turn.

With an increasing number of students at City Centre Campus, we have more of an impact on the community, and downtown is becoming a bigger part of campus life.

So we’d like to follow our students and be more involved in our immediate environment. We want to make sure your paper and your news is read by the community. And we want to tell you about everything happening not only on campus, but all around it, from good eateries and the future downtown arena to nightlife and traffic updates, including the progressing LRT.

But we are the students’ media outlet and can’t do this alone. We need your help to decide on our best look and our new name.

Hudson’s Canadian Tap House, the Princess Theatre and the Students’ Association of MacEwan have donated prize packages to be awarded to the top five names chosen as finalists. Details on this contest can be found on page 2. And for the remainder of the school year, this story will be running online at www.intercamp.ca with a space for your comments and criticisms, including your favourite parts of the paper and elements that need to be done away with for good. You can also email me at managing@intercamp.ca.

Watch for the March 24 issue with the final five names to be voted on.

Thanks for reading!

  2. As a long ago Intercamp contributor it’s fun to see the paper changing… but really … those are the best names you can come up with…. I vote option 6… none of the above.
