Tupelo Honey — Caught Up In The Excess

Tupelo Honey’s first full-length album, Caught Up In The Excess, is a well-polished album perfectly balanced with strong ballads and guitar-based rock songs, in addition to seven acoustic versions of some of the band’s best songs. Continue reading

The Almost — Monster Monster EP

The Almost is a band that emerged under the wings of Underoath founding member Aaron Gillespie. On previous releases, he had created and recorded all of the songs. Continue reading

Keith Urban — Get Closer

Keith Urban is one of the most popular singers on the country music scene these days and his current CD, Get Closer, is a really good example of why that’s the case. Continue reading

Dinosaur Bones — My Divider

I’m a sucker for a great Canadian band. One, because I love great music and two, because I just think Canadians are better. Continue reading

The Dreadnoughts — Polka’s Not Dead

Vancouver’s Dreadnoughts are back with its third album, Polka’s Not Dead. What is interesting about The Dreadnoughts is it actually do play polka-influenced punk rock. Continue reading

Weezer — Pinkerton

Pinkerton is a double-edged sword. It is an album that killed a band’s career and then slowly revived it. The story is legendary. Continue reading

Scythia — . . . of War

Scythia is the musical equivalent of dissociative identity disorder. One minute there is lush instrumentation, showcasing the band members technical prowess, the next minute there is a wild solo and some Maiden-style chugging. Continue reading

Underoath — Disambiguation

After so many lineup changes, it’s amazing that this band is still around to put out great albums. And this album really is great. Continue reading

Swedish House Mafia — Until One

Oh goodness. Coldplay’s Clocks set to a lousy techno beat, just what the world needs.

Norah Jones — . . . Featuring

If you need the musical equivalent to a cup of hot chocolate, look no further. Norah Jones’ new compilation is a sure way to fight off the winter cold. Continue reading

‘Tis the Season to be Fearless

Megan Sarrazin

news editor

The holiday season is undoubtedly my favourite time of year.

Yes, the cold temperatures are unfortunate, but they tend to bring out the best in people. You see people pulling each other out of the ditch, shoveling their neighbours’ walkways and buying coffee for their buddys. Continue reading

Our First Christmas

Danika McDonald

arts editor

This album is what Seth Cohen would be listening to as he prepared for Chrismukkah if he was a) Canadian and b) still airing on national television. Continue reading

Elf

Megan Sarrazin

news editor

This is, by no means, a new soundtrack. The movie was a box-office hit in 2003, with the soundtrack being released shortly after. Continue reading

Charlie Brown Christmas

Danika McDonald

arts editor

Is there really a Christmas album as iconic as the A Charlie Brown Christmas the soundtrack? It has all the elements of the perfect holiday album — it’s not so upbeat that the mood feels forced, nor is it so sentimental that you puke up your rum and eggnog. Continue reading

The Killers — Hot Fuss

Essential Spins

Doug Johnson

writer

The Killers will most likely be remembered as that band who did that “boyfriend who looks like a girlfriend” song. This is a mixed blessing. At least they won’t be remembered for Day and Age or lead-singer Brandon Flower’s, hopefully, short-lived solo project. Continue reading

Escape the Fate — Escape the Fate

Megan Sarrazin

news editor

This band has been barely holding on these last few years and I’m not sure how much this album will help. Continue reading

Miss May I — Monument

Megan Sarrazin

news editor

After hearing the debut release Apologies are for the Weak last summer, I was really looking forward to hearing what else this band had up its sleeve. Continue reading

Wintersleep — New Inheritors

Danika McDonald

arts editor

Probably best known for the single, “Weighty Ghost” from “Welcome to the Night Sky,” Wintersleep shines with another solid album. Continue reading

Danny Fernandes — Automatic LUV

Tisha Raj

writer

I kept an arm’s length from Danny Fernandes after listening to hits such as “Private Dancer”, “Curious” and “Fantasy” from his first studio album Intro. These songs, with elements of R&B and pop, were somewhat popular in the clubs. Admittedly, they were catchy, but not at all memorable. Continue reading

Weekly Rewind

Halloween Hootenanny

Chris Schieman

arts editor

For me, the Halloween season starts about a week before my birthday. The minute the leaves start to turn yellow, I am putting this record on my stereo and rocking out. This is my favourite CD to listen to while getting into the Halloween spirit. Continue reading

Various Artists — Vampire Diaries

Nicole Nytchay

writer

The Vampire Diaries soundtrack is the perfect aphrodisiac to get your Halloween weekend started. The soundtrack has a great variety of hypnotic rock songs with a few brooding, romantic songs creating the perfect balance of love and pain. Continue reading

Marcy Playground — Indaba Remixes from Wonderland

Danika McDonald

writer

Warning: remix record, approach with reasonable expectations. Continue reading

Ice Cube — I Am The West

Dale Boyd

The notorious gangster rapper Ice Cube is back with his second independent release, I Am the West. Continue reading

The Dirty Heads — Any Port in a Storm

Danika McDonald

writer

Self-proclaimed “wannabes,” The Dirty Heads do very little to differentiate themselves from other ska bands like Ill Scarlet. But maybe that’s alright. The most recognizable track is “Lay Me Down,” which was played quite frequently on Sonic. It doesn’t really sway far from that style. Continue reading
